Larry was born in Sutton, Nebraska to Ruben Leopold and Vera Christine (Troutman) Peters, and in 1936 the family moved to Seymour, Missouri, where he spent much of his youth.
A proud World War II veteran, Larry served in the U.S. Army’s 7th Cavalry Division. He was en route to Japan when the war was declared over and went on to serve in Okinawa, Japan as a clerk typist before being honorably discharged.
Following his military service, Larry attended Southwest Missouri State University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1952. That same year, he moved to Peoria and began a long and fulfilling career as an engineer with Caterpillar Inc., where he worked until his retirement in 1984 and was credited with two patents during his tenure.
While in Peoria, Larry met the love of his life, Bonnie Jean (Hamilton) Peters. They were married on June 26, 1954, and shared 48 wonderful years together until her passing on October 12, 2002. From their union came two children, Christine (Peters) Shahan of South Fork, Colorado, and Laurence “Larry Jr.” Peters and his wife Janice of Mapleton, Illinois. Larry was also blessed with a stepdaughter, Dorothy Hysel of Abilene, Texas. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Jennifer (Dugger) Hood and her husband Stephen, Jill (Dugger) Bowden and her husband Scott, Nicholas Parks and his wife Candice, Christopher Peters and his wife Farah and David Light and his wife Kelsey. He was also lovingly known as “Great-Grandpa” to Kayla Cline and her husband Zachary and their children Braxton and Kayden, Cody Bowden, and Courtney, Kaylee, Natalee Parks, Tenley and Sadie Light.
Throughout his life, Larry cherished time outdoors. He had a lifelong love of farming, caring for his land and animals with patience and dedication. He and Bonnie also shared a passion for summer RV trips, traveling the country and creating treasured memories with family and friends.
Larry will be remembered for his devotion to God and family. Also, his steadfast work ethic, his service to country, and his kind and gentle spirit. He leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews, extended family, and friends who will carry his memory in their hearts forever.
