

Elbert Delano Koger, 61, of Spencer, passed away Friday, August 15, 2014 at his residence. He was born in Henry County, August 28, 1952 to Ruth Ann Smith Koger of Spencer and the late James Elbert Koger. He was a loving person that served as a wonderful example of how to be a son, brother, husband, father, uncle, and grandfather.
Elbert was a graduate of Carver High School and received his Associate degree from Danville Community College. He retired from the Air Force after 21 years of service and also retired from the US Postal service after 18 years of service.
He was a member of the American Legion.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Jantje Haanstra Koger of the home; one daughter, Angela Amponsah (Isaac) of Greensboro, NC; three sons, Leander Koger of Martinsville, Yannick Koger (Katy) and Alan Koger, all of Richmond; four grandchildren, Tonia King, Trey Farrar, Ellie Koger and Evelyn Koger; one great-grandchild, Keon Farrar; six sisters, Shirley Glenn, Verna Zapata (Francisco), Robin Koger and Debra Koger, all of Spencer, Nancy Jamison, of Martinsville and Lisa Jewett (Gregg) of Lumberton, NJ; one brother, Michael Koger (Lois) of Bassett.
The funeral service will be held Wednesday, August 20, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Collins Funeral Home in Bassett with the Rev. Oscar Scales officiating. Interment will follow in Carver Memorial Gardens with full military honors by the Martinsville-Henry County Veterans Honor Guard.
There will be a wake held Tuesday from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Collins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends and family during other times at their home in Spencer.
