

He was born January 31, 1920 in Rocky Mount, Virginia to the late Jim Jones and Margaret Cooper Jones. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Jones, his son, Joseph Wilson Jones, his second wife, Edna Craig Jones, sisters, Ellen Greer, Frances Jones, Lucy Scales, Julia Greer, Lillie Greer, and Sally Thomas.
Sam served in the military during World War II as a Corporal, 1st Class in the army. He was wounded in combat and received The “Purple Heart”. He was also a POW in a German Camp and liberated at the war’s end.
He is survived by daughters, Margaret Harris and husband, Ronnie, Nancy Rotenberry and husband, David, and step-daughter, Esther Johnson and husband Paul, all of Bassett, Virginia, and former daughter-in-law Sandra Jones, of Bedford, Virginia, 8 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandson, 8 step-grandchildren, 13 step-great-grandchildren, 17 step-great-great-grandchildren, and 10 step-great-great-great grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., on Monday, July 20, 2015 at Collins Chapel, Bassett, VA. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Pastor Jeff Rhea is officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Herman Church Cemetery, Bassett, VA.
