

He graduated from Atlantic High School in 1950. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1951 and proudly served his country for 20 years. His service included a tour of duty in Viet Nam, as well as England and other European locations.
Maxwell retired from the Air Force in 1971 and attended Southwest Texas State University. He earned a BA and then his Master's degree in Business Administration. By 1982 he was a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Maxwell also taught Accounting classes at both Southwest Texas State University and Austin Community College until his second retirement.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Spencer and Vilies (Badger) Godwin, brother, Dr. Francis Godwin, M.D. and daughter Mary Kay Nelson.
Maxwell is survived by his wife, Frances Maurine, his children, William Harry Godwin, Angela Godwin Bowden, stepchildren, Constance Chapman, Roberta Mattord, Thomas Mattord, Terry Mattord, Herbert Mattord, siblings, Reverend James Godwin, Esther Hall, Hazel Markulec, Ray Godwin, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Friday, December 19 at Marrs-Jones-Newby Funeral Home located at 505 Old Austin Hwy. in Bastrop, Texas. The family will greet guests from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
The Funeral service will be held at Marrs-Jones-Newby Funeral Home in Bastrop, Texas on Saturday, December 20 at 10:00 am.
Burial will be Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
