Barbara was born on November 13, 1932, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to William and Elizabeth Foster. She lived a full and meaningful life marked by kindness, generosity, and a deep love for God.
A lifelong reader, Barbara cherished learning and took great joy in teaching others. She believed strongly in the power of education and shared her knowledge throughout her life. During the Civil Rights Movement, she was an activist who opened her home to help others prepare for voter registration literacy tests. These tests were intentionally confusing and difficult, with even one wrong answer resulting in failure. With patience and determination, Barbara helped her peers face an unjust system, offering guidance, encouragement, and hope.
In her earlier years, Barbara worked as a medical receptionist, and later found success working in sales. No matter her role, she was known for her warm personality and ability to connect with people.
Barbara enjoyed traveling and treasured time spent with family and friends. She was widely known for her caring, positive attitude, and delightful presence. She especially enjoyed many memorable escapades with special friends, which always included plenty of laughter, games, and often a visit to a slot machine.
In 2018, Barbara relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, to be closer to her children. There, she made many new friends and fully embraced her golden years, continuing to share her warmth, humor, and joy with everyone she met.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 52 years, Galvin “Pete” Pitcher, her sister, Elizabeth Ann Foster; and her parents, William and Elizabeth Foster.
Barbara is survived by her loving children, Deborah, Dana, and Cydne. She also leaves behind a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Her legacy of kindness, laughter, learning, and love will live on in the many lives she touched.
