
A longtime resident of Baton Rouge, Bertha "Pitt" Mayers Cooper passed away Thursday, June 18, 2009. Bertha was born in Port Allen and worked for the "the Telephone Company" as a long-distance operator, then as a supervisor before retiring from AT&T in 1978 with 34 years service. Bertha was an avid gardener and fisherwoman who loved to travel, making many trips across the country. Additionally she was a great cook and loved to entertain and share meals with family and friends. However, she will be remembered most for being such a loving, caring wife, mother, grandmother and friend who was always quick to help others. Bertha died at age 87 while in nursing care in Atlanta. Bertha is survived by her only child, Calvin Dale Cooper, and daughter-in-law, Dottie Cooper, and two grandchildren, Shawn Cooper and Chad Cooper and his wife, Sarah Cooper, all of Atlanta; two sisters, Martha Gillis, Baton Rouge, and Elsie Castello, Ethel; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Odell "OC" Cooper; parents, Camille Joseph and Hannis Young Mayers; sister, Theresa Arnold; and brothers, Kenneth J. Mayers, Feltus G. Mayers and Royal J. Mayers. Visitation at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., on Sunday, June 21, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visiting continues the funeral home on Monday, June 22, from 8 a.m. until religious service at 10 a.m., conducted by Deacon Pete Walsh. Interment in Resthaven Gardens of Memory, 11817 Jefferson Highway.
