On Sunday, March 29th 2026, Carol Fowler Benson opened her eyes in the kingdom of Heaven. On Palm Sunday, surrounded by her loving children, she quietly and peacefully slipped the surly bonds of this earth to meet her lord and savior Jesus Christ. Carol reached 80 years old only 10 days earlier. She was a graduate of St. Joseph High School in 1964. Not long after that, she met the love of her life James “Jim” Benson. They had two children that she focused on raising as a devoted housewife and mother. She did however, spend several semesters at Winston State University of North Carolina with a focus on Arts and Mathematics. While never completing her degree or promoting her artwork, her love for arts and crafts have left the family with countless treasures that will remain for generations to come. In addition to this she chose to serve our country in the census bureau over multiple cycles. In her last cycle as a census bureau employee she elevated to the title of Regional AMFO (Assistant Manager of Field Operations) managing approximately 500-700 field agents. She also devoted a great deal of her life to her granddaughters and enjoyed the transition from mom to grandmom more than she could have imagined. Carol might have been a fiery redhead with a strong will but that never distracted her from being a devout Catholic. Her patron saint was St. Joseph and she not only prayed to him often, she named her only son for him. Any prayers or offerings in St. Joseph’s name are greatly appreciated.
Carol is preceded in death by her husband Jim, her parents Glenn and Martha Fowler, siblings; Michael Fowler, Donna Lumpkin & Terry Fowler She is survived by her brother Chris Fowler and wife Joy, Sister-in-law Jeanne Fowler, daughter Jama Whalen and son Joe Benson. Jama’s husband, Doug Whalen and children Cassidy and Heather Dillon. Joe’s wife, Christine and children Rhyn Sylvester, Marilyn, Evan and Ethan Moody. Great Grandchildren from Cassidy are Meredith and Caden with Adeline from Heather.
As a native of the greater Atlanta area, Carol will be laid to rest in Sherwood Memorial Cemetery, Jonesboro Ga on April 6th at approximately 3:15 pm. Visitation and celebration of life at Ford Stewart Funeral home (Jonesboro, Ga) will begin at 11:30 am. Mass Services will be held at St. Philip Benizi Catholic Church (2 pm). Keeping with older traditions, the family would appreciate any donations as floral arrangements in Carol’s honor, coordinated through Ford Stewart funeral home.
