
"Buzz," 86, of Richmond, Va., died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2009, at his home. He was born Aug. 5, 1922, in Allerton, Ill., the seventh of 12 children of Omer Monroe and Edna Hinton Dunn. He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Janet Lessard Dunn; four children, John Roy Dunn, of Richmond, Richard Scott Dunn, of Baton Rouge, Nancy Anne Burns, of Austin, Texas, and Jane Marie Wallace, of Richmond; two sons-in-law; a daughter-in-law; a sister, Marguerite Stevens; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Jane Yerby Dunn, who died in May 1990. He was a charter member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Baton Rouge from 1956 to 1978 and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Richmond from 1978 until now. He was valedictorian of his graduating class from Allerton High School in 1940. He received three degrees from the University of Illinois in Urbana, including a doctorate in accountancy in June 1953. As an undergraduate at the U. of I., he was an honor student and a member of Kappa Delta Rho Fraternity, the Quill and Scroll Honorary and The Tribe of Illini. He was a member of the cross country and track teams and was a six- time letter winner in those sports. He was named to the NCAA All- American Cross Country Team in 1942. He was a Big Ten champion in the outdoor mile and the indoor two-mile runs in 1943. He taught briefly at his alma mater, followed by 26 years as a professor at LSU in Baton Rouge where he served four years as head of the Accounting Department, four years as associate dean of the College of Business Administration and two years as assistant vice chancellor of Academic Affairs. Dr. Dunn retired from LSU in May 1978, and then taught at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond for 10 years as professor of accounting before retiring in May 1987. He was Professor Emeritus at both LSU and VCU. Dr. Dunn became a certified public accountant in August 1955, and was a longtime member of the Society of Louisiana CPAs and the American Institute of CPAs. He authored several articles in professional journals and was the co-author of an accounting textbook and an accounting problems manual. He was active in several accounting organizations, especially the National Association of Accountants, of which he served one year as president of the Baton Rouge Chapter, and the American Accounting Association, of which he was an academic vice president in 1966. At his death, Dr. Dunn was an emeritus member of the Society of Louisiana CPAs and the American Accounting Association. He served in the U.S. Army from June 1943 to April 1946, first in the field artillery and then after June 1944 in the infantry, with the last 16 months as a lieutenant in Company G, 12th Infantry Regiment, Fourth Division. He was awarded a Bronze Star Medal for bravery in action in Germany. After the E.T.O. War ended and the 4th Division was transferred to Camp Butner, N.C. (near Durham), he was company commander of G Company until returning to civilian life in April 1946 to complete his bachelor's degree which he received in June 1947. Dr. Dunn and his family traveled extensively to nearly all parts of the world, especially in Europe and the United States as well as Japan, China, India, Southeast Asia, Iceland and South America. Visitation at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St., on Saturday, Feb. 7, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., followed by a private burial, conducted by the Rev. Gerald Burns, in Greenoaks Memorial Park in the presence of family and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charitable organization of your choice.
