
He died Friday, March 5, 2010, at his home in Baton Rouge. He was a retired lieutenant colonel with the U.S. Air Force. Visitation will be at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St., on Sunday, March 7, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Visitation at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church on Monday, March 8, from 9 a.m. until Mass at 10 a.m. Graveside service will be held at St. John Cemetery in Lafayette at 1 p.m. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 51 years, Rose Scotola Berggreen. He is survived by sons, Charles Cole Berggreen, M.D., and Paul Jerome Berggreen, M.D.; daughters-in-law, Cindy Bickert Berggreen and Charmaine Champagne Berggreen; grandchildren, Charmaine Elise, Nicole Jordan, Carly Kristin and Cole Robert; brothers, Monsignor Robert Berggreen and Leo Berggreen, Esq.; and sisters, Bonnie Somsen and Mary Castille. Pallbearers will be Charles Berggreen, Paul Berggreen, Greg Cascio, Leo Berggreen, John Tessier and Perry Scotola. Honorary pallbearers are Phillip Scotola and Robert Earl Berggreen. Special thanks to his excellent physicians, William Hines, M.D., Henry Patrick, M.C., and Curtis Chastain, M.D. Cole was a veteran of World War II and Vietnam. He retired from the U.S. Air Force with numerous decorations after 30 years of service. He received his bachelor's degree from USL, Lafayette, where he taught ROTC and met his wife of 51 years, Rose Scotola. While in the military, he earned his master's degree in business administration from the University of Chicago. After retirement from the military, he worked for 16 years for the Louisiana State Highway Safety Commission. He was a most devoted husband and father.
