Darrell W “Bill” Alligood passed away peacefully on March 5, 2024 at the age of 86. He was an adoring husband, a loving father, and a loyal friend to all who knew him. Bill was an avid outdoorsman who cherished his farm in St. Francisville. He rarely entered a room where someone didn’t know him. His sense of humor was unmatched, and he will be deeply missed by all whose paths he crossed.
Bill was born in Laurens County, Georgia on December 16, 1937.
He served in the Florida National Guard for 6 years and as Vice Chair of the TPC Golf Tournament and VP of the Gator Bowl Association, both in Jacksonville, FL. He retired from American International Group (AIG) in 2002, after working for 43 years. He worked in several locations before being transferred to Baton Rouge in 1983, where he was named President and CEO of the Audubon Insurance Company. After retiring, he formed Consultants Plus, LLC. This entity acted as an advisor to large commercial insurance accounts, as well as assisting insurance companies and self-insured funds in LA. He was a Past President of the Property Insurance Association of LA and the LA Fair and Coastal Plans.
Bill is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Susan; their six children, Lisa Ragland (Brett) of Oviedo, FL, Keri Malloy of Hagerstown, MD, Dawn Laborde (Chris) of West Palm Beach, FL, Julie Chappell (James) of Greenville, SC, David Alligood (Katie) of Baton Rouge, LA, and John Alligood (Erin) of Baton Rouge, LA, and his brother, Joel Alligood (Marlene) of Athens, GA. He was lovingly referred to as Gimpa or Pow by his 13 grandchildren and recently welcomed his first great- grandchild. He was preceded in death by his father, Darrell William Alligood and his mother, Mildred Rivers Alligood, who he cherished and recognized until the end. We are comforted knowing that she welcomed him into the gates of Heaven.
Bill and Susan both enjoyed their affiliation with St. Lukes Episcopal Church in Baton Rouge, where Bill served on the Vestry, as Senior Warden, and as a former member of the St. Lukes School Board. Many of our families’ most treasured memories included St. Lukes School and Church, which unfortunately suffered a major fire recently.
The family would like to express our sincerest thanks to Eddrina Drake, Britany Lynn Agnew and Joyce Coats for caring for our dad as their own, for Chris Caire, Eric Ogbebor and the professional and caring staff at Barclay House of Baton Rouge, and Ingrid Hidalgo and the incredible support team at Audubon Hospice of Baton Rouge. You all will forever be a part of our extended family.
Visitation will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, located at 3552 Morning Glory Avenue on March 11 from 10:00-12:00 followed immediately by a memorial service at 12:00PM.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to the St. Lukes Fire fund (https://onrealm.org/SaintLukesEpisc/-/form/give/fire.)
