

David William Schlecht, Sr., born in San Antonio, TX, was the youngest of seven children of Rev. Willard Ernest William Schlecht and Loretta Lucile Benne Schlecht. He passed away on Monday, April 6, 2026 at age 76. He lived in San Antonio, TX, Baton Rouge, LA, Crosby, TX and Brusly, LA prior to settling in Newkirk, OK. He served in the US Navy as a young man then worked as a boilermaker building and repairing steel tanks and water towers until he retired.
He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Joyce Charlene Schlecht, his children, Laura Cecile Schlecht, Claire Lucile (Cole) Schlecht, Richard Andreas (Marta)Schlecht and Jacob Alexander Schlecht, stepchildren, Neil Hinch and Jenny Hinch Kelly, and five step-grandchildren. He also leaves two sisters, Anita (Edgar) Wall and Joyce (Barry) Langley.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, David William Schlecht, Jr., stepson, David Hinch, and siblings, Mary Orr, Judith Klute, Margaret Palmer, and Paul Schlecht.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 10, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 402 South Kirkland Dr., Brusly, LA. Visitation will be at 9:00 AM with services following at 10:00 AM.
Services will also be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 101 S Magnolia Ave., Newkirk, Oklahoma on a date not yet determined.
The Family would like to express their appreciation to the ICU and PCU staff at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center In Baton Rouge, LA for the care they gave David the last three weeks of his life.
David loved cats and had many throughout his lifetime. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his honor may be made to the North Oklahoma Humane Society, 900 West Prospect Ave., Ponca City, OK 74601.
