

Donald (Don) Carey, husband, father, Pops, uncle, friend, “beverage” connoisseur, traveler, planner, family man and the most joyful person you ever knew passed away on July 15, 2021, at the age of 75.
Don was born in New York City on October 2, 1945, to father Edward Carey and mother Eileen Carey. The oldest of three kids, Donald graduated from Xaverian High School in Brooklyn, New York and Syracuse University. He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps.
Don then moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana permanently in 1972, and worked as a Chemical Engineer and bituminous engineer for the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development until his retirement.
When Don moved to Baton Rouge, he was a part of a very close group of friends and met his wife, Ervin Faye Penn (Boo). The two were married in September of 1972 at St. George Catholic Church in Baton Rouge. Don and Boo soon became parishioners of Our Lady of Mercy, and a few years later they started their own family with 2 daughters. That family has now grown to include 6 grandchildren.
Don and Ervin Faye have been the patriarchs of their extended family, with Don being the life of the party. They have enjoyed 20+ years of retirement, traveling and having adventures, attending LSU football and baseball games, and spending the majority of their time with family. Don and Boo would have celebrated 49 years of marriage in September.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, and by one of his sisters, Kathleen Carey Reeves. He is survived by his wife, Ervin Faye Carey; children Christine Mayeux Cosnahan and Ashley Howard; son-in-law’s Mark Cosnahan and Nick Howard; grandchildren, Zaira and Ronan Mayeux, Harrison and Conrad Howard, and Harrison and Isabel Cosnahan; and sister, Marilyn Carey.
A visitation for Don will be Sunday, July 25th from 4pm to 7pm at Greenoaks Funeral Home. The funeral will be Monday, July 26th at Our Lady of Mercy with a visitation in the Church at 8:30am followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am. Interment is to follow in Greenoaks Memorial Park. All are invited to attend.
