Baton Rouge, LA - Donna Staples Vetter (Tutta), a lifelong resident of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, passed away peacefully on July 5, 2025, at the age of 82, comfortable and secure in the home she built and loved. Born on June 11, 1943, Tutta was a proud graduate of St. Joseph's Academy and Louisiana State University, both institutions that would remain close to her heart throughout her life.
Early in her career, Tutta demonstrated her concern for children and families as a Head Start counselor. She was an active and appreciated presence in Baton Rouge's social and philanthropic circles, generously lending her time, energy, and leadership to causes she cared about deeply.
She chaired the fundraiser that was the origin of the St. Joseph's Academy Science and Technology Center, ensuring future generations of students would have access to STEM resources. Tutta's love for LSU extended far beyond the classroom; she served as Chair of the LSU Alumni Association Board and on the LSU Athletic Council, championing the university's mission and spirit. She was also a devoted supporter of the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine, playing a pivotal role in helping the Vet School acquire radiology equipment to better care for animals and train future veterinarians. Her service in those roles was cut short by a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis.
Above all, Tutta cherished her family and friends. She was a talented chef and served as Executive Chef in her family's Baton Rouge restaurant. She made an early cooking video, but decided she didn't want to promote it because she "didn't want her hair to always smell like roux." Tut had an eye for fashion and was known for her unique style. She had an active lifestyle. Before MS slowed her down, she enjoyed powerlifting, golf, and running. And when it did slow her down she began to paint and her paintings are treasured by her family.
She is survived by her loving husband, Cyril Vetter; her two daughters, Heather (Mark) Schaefer of Nashville and Gabrielle Vetter of Baton Rouge; her three adored granddaughters, Ellie, Claire, and Ava Schaefer, all of Nashville, and her sister Lou Staples of Baton Rouge.
Tutta will be remembered for her warmth, her spirit, her easy and infectious laugh, and the legacy of service and love she leaves behind. Her family and all who knew her take comfort in her love, her peaceful passing and the lives she touched.
Visitation will be on Friday, July 11 from 11AM - 12PM, followed by a short service at noon. Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government Street. In lieu of flowers, if so inclined, consider a donation to St. Joseph's Academy or the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine in her memory.
