Elaine Bergeron Gauthreaux was called to her eternal home on March 31, 2025, at the age of 78. Although born in White Castle, Elaine spent her childhood residing in Union, Louisiana prior to moving to Baton Rouge.
Attending Romeville High School, she played basketball, proudly receiving two trophies for best guard and letterman. Smart as a whip, she was pridefully voted Salutatorian of her 1964 graduating class. Enjoying assisting others, Elaine went on to work in retail and as a medical clerk.
She met the love of her life, a handsome, blue eyed, Thomas Gauthreaux, Sr., at a local dance hall. Elaine excitedly cherished sharing the story of how Thomas proposed. Attending a movie at Tiger Drive In in Baton Rouge, Thomas placed the ring in a popcorn box. Becoming anxious waiting for her to get to the bottom; he took the box, dumped out the popcorn, slid the ring on her finger and asked her to marry him. The sweet story was later labeled “Popcorn Surprise” by The Advocate. The two were married and had 3 beautiful children. Thomas and Elaine were devoted in marriage for 54 years before Thomas was called to his heavenly home in 2019.
To all who knew her, Elaine was a loving, devoted Catholic, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. It was evident how fiercely she loved her entire family and her pets. Her children were loved deeply, but those grandchildren were the apples of her eyes. Through rain, snow, sleet or shine, she never missed a mass, special family occasion or her grandchildren’s school or sporting events.
Bringing her peace and joy, Elaine relished attending mass, praying the rosary, vacationing with family in California, listening to music, dancing, sharing life stories, painting with pastels, reading the paper, crossword puzzles, playing solitaire on the computer, sharing funny jokes/stories through email, daily attempts at beating her godchild Shannon in Wordle, early morning walks with neighborhood friends, savoring any shrimp dish, and tending to flowers/plants in her backyard.
Elaine is preceded in death by her beloved husband Thomas Gauthreaux, Sr.; parents, John and Marie Bergeron; brothers, Jimmy and Johnny Bergeron; sisters, Valerie (Bergeron) Chauvin and Alice (Bergeron) Robert; son, John Gauthreaux; and daughter, Michelle (Gauthreaux) Duffy.
She is survived by loving son, Thomas Gauthreaux, Jr., and wife, Debra; son, Donny Gauthreaux; granddaughter, Taylor Duffy; grandsons, Landon and Jacob Gauthreaux; and step grandson Adam White; sisters, Angela Schexnaydre (husband Chris) and Debra Andermann (husband Mark); and brother, Dennis Bergeron, in addition to numerous nieces and nephews.
