
A resident of Baton Rouge and retired member of IBEW Local 995, Slim died Friday, March 2, 2012, at the age of 83 in Ft. Lauderdale after being diagnosed with leukemia while visiting with his daughter. He was a founding member of the Knights of Columbus Council 6531 (St. Pius X), as well as an active member of the High Line Hunting Club. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 63 years, Lois Spillman Nettles; daughter and son-in-law, Pam Nettles Browning and Daniel O'Neal, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; and son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Linda Davis Nettles, of Baton Rouge. Also survived by his sister, Theresa Nettles Simmons, of St. Francisville; and brother and sister-in-law, T. Thomas Nettles and Billie, of Ethel; sister-in-law, Nell Lindsey Nettles, of New Roads; grandchildren, Cristy Browning Heck and husband Wallace, Nicki Browning Charlson and fiance Robert Stewart, all of Baton Rouge, Dara Browning, of Perth, Australia, Amy Nettles Duncan and husband Mickey, of Walker, Andrea Nettles Williams and fianceÌ\u0081 John Burns, Jonathan Broussard and Joshua Broussard, all of Baton Rouge. He was also blessed to enjoy 10 great-grandchildren, Orrin and Tyler Fontenot, Tripp Heck, Ethan and Owen Charlson, Zachary, Gabryel, Halle Duncan, Caleb and Riley Williams. Preceded in death by his parents, Tolar A. Nettles and Edith Talbot Nettles; brother, Donnie Nettles; and sister, Margaret Ann Nettles. An avid fisherman, hunter, guitar player and most notably storyteller, Slim was the much loved patriarch of his family. He referred to his five granddaughters as his boat paddlers, since he raised them all during the summers together at their family camp of 43 years, on Belle River. He traveled the country as an electrician and carried with him a lifetime of experiences from a generation that is almost gone, but will never be forgotten. If you spent anytime with Slim, then you surely heard one of his many stories that usually included a life lesson of some kind. His family is his legacy and he is their hero. Visitation Services will be Tuesday evening, March 6, from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Rabenhorst East, 11000 Florida Blvd. Visitation resumes on Wednesday, March 7, at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, 14040 Greenwell Springs Road, at 10 a.m., with Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am. Interment at Greenoaks Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Orrin Fontenot, Tyler Fontenot, Michael LaFleur, Randy LaFleur, Dan O'Neal, Jeff Summers, Will Summers and Michael Fontenot. Honorary pallbearers are Edmond "Mutt" Summers, Wallace Heck Jr., Ray O'Neal, Robert Stewart, Lee Davis, Rickey Davis Sr., and Rickey Davis Jr.
