
Eugene Joseph Cabral was born in San Francisco, raised in Albuquerque and was a resident of Baton Rouge for the past 40 years. He died peacefully at The Carpenter House of St. Joseph Hospice on Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012. Gene was the owner of Gene's Texaco and Gene's Automotive on South Acadian Thruway for more than 37 years. He never saw a car problem he wasn't willing to tackle and fix. He was a kind, generous man who touched many lives and always stood up for what he thought was right. He loved people and always had a smile and a story ready to share. While serving his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War, he received his training to maintain and repair airplanes. Gene is survived by his wife of 27 years, Patricia Shehane Cabral; daughter, Melody Russell, of St. Francisville; son, Mark Russell, of Natchitoches; and daughter, Patti Colwell and husband Brad, of Shreveport. Grandchildren include Brandon Colwell, of Dallas, Lauren and Alison Colwell, of Shreveport, Zachary Talley, of Baton Rouge, Mitchell Talley, of St. Francisville, and Michaela' Russell, of Goldsboro, N.C.; and great-grandson, Troy Talley, of St. Francisville. He is also survived by a brother, Robert Cabral and wife Sumie, of San Jacinto, Calif.; and a close brother, Joseph Jojola and wife Joan, of Las Cruces, N.M.; numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Beatrice Silva Myers and his stepfather, Elmer Myers, both of Albuquerque; and his father, John Cabral, of San Francisco. Visitation will be at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St., on Sunday, Jan. 8, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Monday, Jan. 9, from 10 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 749 East Blvd. Interment will be in Port Hudson National Cemetery. Memorials may be made in Gene's name to The Carpenter House of St. Joseph Hospice, Baton Rouge.
