Francis A. Furrate, 82, a native and lifelong resident of Baton Rouge passed on to his eternal reward on Wednesday, December 4, 2013 at St. Joseph Hospice Carpenter House, after a brief, but courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his sons Jamie Furrate, Dallas, TX, Jeffrey Furrate and daughter-in-law Connie, Denham Springs, La.; sister-in-law Cuba Furrate, Baton Rouge; grandchildren Kristin Furrate Maples and husband Chris Maples, Frisco, TX., Tregre Furrate, Dallas, TX., Shannon Furrate, Denham Springs, La., Brandon Furrate, Denham Springs, La., Drew Furrate, Denham Springs, La.; 5 great-grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was a 1947 graduate of Catholic High School and the LSU School of Banking of the South, and was a retired vice president of City National Bank, where he spent 39 years. Francis taught banking courses to young bankers for 27 years through the American Institute of Banking. He served his country in the Navy Reserves from 1948-1960. Francis spent 40 years as a high school football official with the Baton Rouge Area Football Officials Association, including 11 years as Assignment Secretary and was also a former member of the LSU Track Officials Association. An avid sports fan, he especially enjoyed attending Catholic High School and LSU sporting events. He loved spending time with family and friends, and touched the lives of many people throughout his career in banking and as a football official. Francis was known as the historian of Baton Rouge by his friends, who enjoyed hearing his stories and knowledge of everything Baton Rouge. He attended retreat at the Manresa House of Retreats for decades and was proud to be a Man of Manresa .He was preceded in death by his parents, James Emile Furrate and Ursula Cassano Furrate; his wife Martha Greer Furrate; brothers James Preston Furrate, Eugene Furrate, Louis C. Furrate, L.J. Furrate and sisters Ursula Furrate Hecker and Anna Furrate Greaud; grandson Joseph Ryan Furrate and granddaughter Sarah Elizabeth Furrate. Arrangements are being handled by Rabenhorst Funeral Home (East), 11000 Florida Blvd, with visiting from 5:00pm to 9:00pm Friday and at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 11441 Goodwood Blvd. Saturday from 10:30am to 11:30am with a funeral mass at 11:30am officiated by Father Jack Nutter. Pallbearers will be Cletus Greaud, Tim Greaud, Louis Greaud, Bubba Morton, Tregre Furrate, Brandon Furrate, Gerald Didier and Tyrrell Bordelon. Interment will be at Resthaven Garden of Memory, 11817 Jefferson Highway.
