
Colonel Francis Calmes Schaffer, born July 7, 1924, in Vicksburg, MS passed away on August 19. He joined his beloved grandson, James "Burke" Cobb, who preceded him in death by one month. He is also preceded in death by his parents, Lucie Cason Schaffer and George Michael Schaffer. He is survived by his wife, Andina Diaz-Lobo Schaffer, his brother Lucien Cason Schaffer and wife, Frances, and his children, Verien Schaffer, Marian Schaffer, George M. Schaffer and wife Elisa, Marla Schaffer Cobb and husband, Jim; and Francis Calmes Schaffer, Jr. and wife, Melody. He is also survived by grandchildren: Kevin Murphy, Meghan Hemingway and husband, Johnny, Lindsey Golden and husband, Rory; Adam Whitaker, Schaffer and Dallas Cobb, Lucy Cruz and Cason Schaffer, and a great granddaughter, Ever Golden. He will also be missed by numerous nieces and nephews. Schaffer, a decorated veteran having served in WWII and the Korean Conflict, lived a full and adventurous life. A 1951 LSU graduate in Chemical Engineering and a registered Professional Engineer, President of the Schaffer Global Group, and its predecessor companies, he became world renowned in the worldwide sugar and related agribusiness sectors. His contributions to the industry are recognized in over 60 countries and resulted in awards by the US State Department and the Corporate Council on Africa in recognition of corporate citizenship in Africa, innovation and exemplary international business practices. He was also partner in SS&S Fabricators for over 50 years. His service to the International Business Community and Sugar Industry is recognized by Memberships in the World Trade Center of New Orleans, the Corporate Council on Africa, ASSCT, ASAC, and many others. We have been so blessed to have shared in his life and to watch and admire as he touched so many lives in corners of the world unknown to most. This foundation was initiated by Mr. Schaffer in honor of his grandson Burke Cobb to provide screening to detect cardiac defects in student athletes.
