He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Simon and Anna Nell Hernandez; his brother, Bruce Hernandez; and his brother-in-law, Salvador Saia. He is survived by his loving sister, Robbie Ann Hernandez Saia; sister-in-law, Robin Porta Hernandez; and many nephews, nieces, great-nieces, and great-nephews who cherished him.
Gerald was a proud graduate of Louisiana State University and a dedicated Certified Public Accountant throughout his career. Beyond his profession, he was a skilled craftsman who found joy in creating woodwork, leaving behind many beautiful pieces that reflected his talent and care.
A devoted member of St. Gabriel Catholic Church, Gerald gave of himself wholeheartedly. He could often be found warmly greeting parishioners, serving as an alternate altar server, assisting with collections, carrying the gifts, and lending his craftsmanship by building the shelves that hold the prayer books on the pews. His faith and service were central to his life.
Gerald had a generous heart and was always ready to help others, sharing both his time and his talents in countless ways. A true animal lover, he cared for the cats that wandered onto his property and lovingly looked after the dogs of Robbie Ann and Matthew as if they were his own. He especially enjoyed tending to his chickens and delighted in sharing fresh eggs with family and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 6, at St. Gabriel Catholic Church. Visitation will take place from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m., followed by a Catholic Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Gerald’s beloved parish, St. Gabriel Catholic Church.
