Irma Frances Vernon Hebert “Frances” of Baton Rouge, Louisiana passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 8, 2017 at the age of 94. She enjoyed traveling, reading, but especially spending time with her family and friends. Frances was born in McComb, Mississippi on January 4, 1923 and moved with her parents to Roseland, Louisiana at a young age. Later, she lived in Baton Rouge and graduated from Istrouma High School. Frances was married to Durwood C. Hebert for thirty years. Frances is preceded in death by her mother, Eula Bankston Vernon, and father, Archie Vernon, brothers Paul Vernon and Luther Vernon, and her grandson Joseph Albert Harvey, former husband, Durwood C. Hebert, and a great friend Jack P.F. Gremillion, Sr. She is survived by her daughters, Susan and husband Robert Hunkapillar, and Janet and husband Albert Harvey III, and her grandchildren, Brandon Hunkapillar and wife Alyssa, Adam Hunkapillar and Alexandra and Anastasia Harvey, her sister and husband, Elizabeth and Richard Allen; and numerous nieces and nephews. Frances was a retired certified registered Anesthetist who graduated from Charity Hospital Nursing School in New Orleans. Frances worked over 36 years at the Baton Rouge General and Woman’s Hospital. Frances was a well-respected Anesthetist and patients would ask for her by name. She loved her work and took pride in it. Frances, a decorated veteran, served in the U.S. Army Nurse Corp in Europe during World War II and the Korean War obtaining the rank of Major. Frances looked upon those years favorably as she made a difference while serving. What was most impressive about Frances was her positive attitude she exhibited with her children and grandchildren. Frances always said, “Work hard and you can achieve anything you want in life.” Quick wit and intelligence were key characteristics of Frances. She often had all of her family laughing with her funny stories. Frances was a great example to her family of the importance of God, family, and hard work. We would like to thank the staff at Lake Sherwood Village and Nursing Care Connections for helping Mom celebrate life with happiness and love in these last few years. Frances was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, former member of the Jeffersonians, American Legion Post #38, and the Retired Officers Association. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to charity of your choice in memory of Frances. Family and friends are invited to attend the visitation at Greenoaks Funeral Home on Friday, July 14, 2017 from 12 pm until funeral service starting at 2pm. Burial with military honors will follow in Greenoaks Memorial Park.
