James Heath Abernathy

James Heath Abernathy, age 57, of Amite, LA passed away on Sunday, October 12, 2025, at his home. James was of the Baptist faith and a veteran of the National Guard United States Army. James dedicated 19 years of his career driving for Big 4 Trucking (Smitty's). He loved spending time outdoors, driving his tractor, working on his Jeep, and organizing his tools in his shed.

James was preceded in death by his father, James G. Abernathy, brother, Shane Abernathy, sister, Michelle Sovoca, and grandparents Doris Short, Jose & Lucille Abernathy.

He is survived by his loving wife, Dawn Webb Abernathy of 31 years; son, Robert Shane (Brylan Church); mother, Patsy Abernathy; brother, Peter Abernathy; sister in-law Gina Abernathy, Paula McGuire (Kevin), and Lori Webb.

He is remembered as “Jim Jim” (grandfather) to Karter Grace, Paisley Grace, Olivia James, and Colter Reese and “Uncle James” to Hailey Rainey, Meghan McGuire, Jason Abernathy, Ryan Abernathy, and Riley Savoca.

Dawn and Shane would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Mary Maluccio and Southern Grace Hospice as well as all the family that came together and provided care and love for James; especially Cindy Giron, Paula and Kevin McGuire.

Funeral services for James will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Neuroendocrine Cancer Foundation.
