James Douglas Browning, age 73, is now and forever resting in the arms of his Savior, Jesus Christ. He is walking/dancing on "streets of gold" in his new cowboy boots.....WITHOUT a brace! Doug lost his battle with leukemia on December 1, 2015, but he won the war. He was an active member of Fellowship Baptist Church. Doug was born on August 18, 1942 in Greenwell Springs, LA, now the City of Central, and was a lifetime resident. He was a 1960 graduate of Central High School and was always a public servant. Doug worked for the East Baton Rouge Sherriff’s Office for 34 years in Communications, achieving the rank of Captain. During his tenure, he led in the planning, development and operation of the Central sub-station Communication Center. After retirement, he worked part-time for the East Baton Rouge Parish School System as a security dispatch officer, where his experience served him and EBRPSS well. When Central became a city, then Governor Kathleen Blanco, appointed him to serve as Central's first Chief of Police. He was later re-elected to that position by the people of Central who respected his ability to lead and his heart for the community. Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Sidney Ezra Browning and Fannie Richard Browning. He is survived by his adoring wife, Betty "Cooky" Chemin Browning, son, Barry Douglas Browning, stepson, Jerry G. Branch, step-daughter, Cynthia B. Hollis (Paul) and a granddaughter, Erin Rae Hollis. He is also survived by his siblings, Roxie Lippert (Bob), Maurice Browning (Sharon), Virginia Womack (Warren), Sylvia Carroll (Doug), Nancy Adams (Tommy), Kenneth Browning (Shirley), Ethel Jenkins and Brenda Jenkins (Charlie) and innumerable nieces and nephews, who all adored him. The family would like express their gratitude to the nurses and staff at BRGH Bluebonnet and Mid-city locations and all of the devoted medical personnel who treated, supported and loved Doug and his family through his journey. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Pallbearers will be Maurice Browning, Kenneth Browning, L.H. Pourciau, Jerry Branch; Rusty Chemin, Louis Chemin III, and Honorary pallbearers Carson Bueto and Manie Chemin (nephew). Services will be held at Greenoaks Funeral Home with visitation on Friday, December 4th from 4-9 p.m. and again on Saturday, December 5th from 9 a.m. until memorial celebration service at 2 p.m. conducted by Reverends Huey Moak and Tony Davis.
