Jean Cooper Choppin, a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed peacefully on May 18, 2022 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Mama Jean, as she was known to all, lived a full and wonderful life of more than 97 years.
Raised on the family farm in Alexandria, Louisiana, she was born in Pinola, Mississippi on November 6, 1924 as her mother chose to travel back to Mississippi to have Jean delivered by her grandfather, the local country doctor in Pinola.
She married on August 21, 1948 and moved to Baton Rouge where she raised her two daughters and became the matriarch for her parents and growing family. Although residing in Baton Rouge for more than seventy years she frequently returned to the family homestead in Alexandria and always thought of herself as a country girl. She traveled frequently to visit her family as they spread their wings to Minnesota, Florida, North Carolina, Texas, Massachusetts and Alaska, especially enjoying dancing when she spent part of the summers in Alaska
Jean is survived by her daughters, Jean Ann Nierenberg and her husband Alan, and Amelia Lenig and her husband David. She was grandmother to Jean Ann and Alan’s children Natalie Elizabeth Nierenberg and David Wilson Nierenberg and great-grandmother to Aaron, Drew, Genevie and Esme. She was grandmother to Amelia and David’s children Ross Lenig, George (Randy) Lenig, Alyssa Lenig and Laura Bicknell and great-grandmother to Kaleigh and Ezra. Additionally Jean is survived by several nieces and nephews and their families. Jean is also survived by her dearest family friend Mary Silva along with her loving family and by special friends Nonie Parisi and Jeannie Barnett, as well as many other dear friends she touched throughout her life.
She was preceded in her death by her parents William and Sadye Cooper, her brother William Cooper Jr., and her first husband, Clifford Wilson Choppin, the father of her children and second husband John L. Wilson.
