

Survived by his wife of 58 years, Scharlie Pearl Lawson Neal of Baton Rouge, son, John A. Neal, daughter-in-law, Anna Babin-Neal, daughter, Julie Ann Neal Maryman and son-in-law James A. Maryman. Granddaughter, Lauryn A. Neal Poche’, her husband, Joseph Wayne (Joey) Poche’ and two great-granddaughters, Dominique Leslie and Alexandra Grace.
Proceeded in death by S.T. Neal and Audrey W. Neal of Castor, LA. Survived by his brother, Thomas W. Neal, sisters, Dorothy Neal Cook, Audrey Neal Riser, husband Gerry Riser, Jacqueline (Jackie) Neal Jacobs, husband, Jon Jacobs, Sarah Neal Moran and Linda Neal.
He served in the armed forces as an Army Paratrooper with honorable discharge.
J.R. was a resident of Baton Rouge, after 37 years of service and being rewarded the Merit Award for his 37 years of Accident Free Service, retired from Entergy two decades ago.
A longtime member of Broadmoor United Methodist Church, helping in any way he could.
He loved spending time with his friends and family.
J.R. enjoyed his “camp” and lake in Castor, Louisiana. He would spend much of his free time riding his John Deere tractor and fishing. He loved to cook and his specialty was cooking his famous steaks. Each year he hosted the Neal family July 4th weekend. Family and friends drove in from miles away as to, not miss, “J.R.’s Annual Reunion”.
He loved the outdoors. J.R. had worked with his son John, out at John’s property developments, riding huge tractors and assisting any way he could.
He was a huge fan of NASCAR racing and attended several major races throughout the years. Dale Earnhardt was his favorite driver of all time.
J.R.’s passion was his motorcycles, of which, he had enjoyed most of his life. He was a member of the Harley Davidson Hogs. He owned several bikes throughout the years, however, his favorite was his most recent, “the Fat Boy”. He participated in charity rides and most of all, he enjoyed riding with his son and close friends. He attended Sturgis several times and enjoyed the riding trips with his motorcycle buddies.
Visitation to be held at Greenoaks Funeral Home located at 9595 Florida Blvd in Baton Rouge, LA. Friday evening, October 16, 2015 from 5pm to 9pm. Visitation will resume Saturday, October 17, 2015 from 8:00am until funeral service at 10:00am. Interment will immediately follow at Greenoaks Cemetery.
Services to be conducted by Woodrow W. Fountain of Alamogordo, New Mexico, a retired Baptist pastor and assisted by Ken Carroll, Executive Pastor from Broadmoor United Methodist Church of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Pall Bearers are John A. Neal, James Maryman, Joseph (Joey) Poche’, Thomas W. Neal, Gerry Riser, Jon Jacobs, Jim Chabina, Marvin O’Neal and A.M. (Buddy) Vutera as Honorary Pall Bearer.
J.R.’s family would like to thank Dr. Ronald Fields, and Nurses Dustin and Connie from Our Lady of The Lake Regional Medical Center and Gertrude from Nottingham Rehabilitation Center, and Virginia Leagerd for the loving and compassionate care he received from them.
