Joanne Duke passed away peacefully and with loved ones near her on April 6, 2022. A native of New Orleans and resident of Baton Rouge, she was 92 and proud of it. Joanne, “Momee” to many, was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend who above all loved spending time with her family. She especially enjoyed the young ones, her face lighting up when holding a baby. All will miss her but will keep her alive in their hearts and memories. Joanne liked to keep busy, staying active into her nineties. She took art lessons, played on a tennis team, did Tai chi, danced with an international folk dancing group, and even tried belly dancing. She loved to swim, camp, garden, take walks in her neighborhood, and play cards and board games, especially on Sundays with Carl. One activity that brought her joy for countless years was playing bridge, including years with the same friends at tables in their homes or the neighborhood BREC center. Joanne dedicated time to volunteer at St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room. She was a charter member of St. Thomas More parish, her faith bringing her much solace throughout her life.
Joanne is survived by her daughters, Robbye Duke, Debbie Duke, Michele Roberts and husband Mark; sons, Mike Duke and wife Jerry; David Duke, John Duke; 13 grandchildren, Marcy Duke, Matthew Duke, Kevin Duke, Kelley Mouch, Gayle Kees, Jesse Kees, Sarah Harris, Erica Garland, Carl Duke, Robbie Thomson, Briggs Thomson, Stratton Thomson, Morgan Thomson; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; numerous Tennessee nieces and nephews; and many longtime friends. She is preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, William Morgan (Bill) Duke, whom she referred to as “the best and most loving husband anyone could ever have”; parents, Henry and Mayme Tuite Roeling; son, Billy Duke; granddaughter, Melissa Duke Mooney; daughter-in-law, Julyn Martin Duke; and brother, Henry Roeling.
A visitation will be held at Greenoaks Funeral Home on April 19, 2022, from 10 am – 11:30 am. A funeral service will be held at St. Thomas More at 12 pm with burial to follow in Greenoaks Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Mike Duke, John Duke, Matthew Duke, Carl Duke, Briggs Thomson, and Stratton Thomson. Honorary pallbearers will be David Duke, Damian Jackson, and Mark Roberts. The family would like to thank April and Trell of Guardian Angel Sitting Service for their loving care. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room.
