Joel Emory Sanders, 71, resident of Central, LA, went home to be with the Lord on December 7, 2025. Joel was born on August 23, 1954, and lived a life marked by faith, generosity, and a deep love for his family and community.
Joel is survived by his devoted wife, Karen Sanders, and by his children: Ben Sanders (Lindsey) and Jeff Sanders (Camille). He is also survived by his stepchildren: Justin Langford (Melinda); Jordan Langford (Carrie); and Julie Perrien (Patrick). He is also survived by his sister, Alice S. Comish. His greatest joy was his grandchildren, who lovingly knew him as Big Daddy: Caroline and Jack Sanders; Noah, London, and Reilly Langford; Bryan and Madelyn Langford; and Declan and Sloane Perrien. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Virgina “Ginny” Sanders, by his parents Meade Sanders, Sr. and Beatrice F. Sanders, and brother Meade Sanders, Jr.
A graduate of Istrouma High School, Joel went on to earn a degree in Forestry from Louisiana State University before establishing his own successful business. Known for his strong work ethic, integrity, and creativity, Joel found joy in woodworking and could often be found in his shop crafting something meaningful for others. He was an avid reader and a gifted cook who loved sharing meals and stories with those he cherished.
Joel’s faith was the foundation of his life. Despite his 12-year-long struggle with cancer, which he fought with the Lord’s strength, his faith never wavered. He loved the Lord wholeheartedly and lived out that love by serving others. He was especially devoted to supporting the homeless community in Baton Rouge and founded the nonprofit Geaux & Deaux Ministries, through which he worked tirelessly to meet needs and share hope.
Visitation from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and service to follow at 11:00 a.m. will be held at Istrouma Baptist Church on Wednesday, December 10, 2025. A private graveside service for family will follow at Greenoaks Funeral Home and Memorial Park. We encourage attendees to wear denim in honor of Joel.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to Istrouma Baptist Church Missions or the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home, causes that reflect Joel’s heart for service.
Joel will be remembered for his kindness, humility, and unwavering commitment to loving others well. His legacy of Christian faith and service lives on in the countless lives he touched.
