John William Nipper, Sr. of Baton Rouge passed away on Saturday, July 9, 2022 at the age of 87. He was born April 6, 1935 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, but grew up in Texarkana, Arkansas where he married his childhood friend, Kitty Hussing.
John had a successful career teaching at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and later at Northeastern State College in Monroe, LA. This brought him to a position at Louisiana Training Institute also in Monroe, which led to an offer as Education Supervisor with the Department of Corrections in Baton Rouge. John was then appointed as Undersecretary of Corrections until his retirement in 1988.
However, John’s greatest role was that of devoted husband of 63 years, beloved father, proud grandfather, and even prouder great-grandfather!
In 1998, John wrote the following about his family: “Looking back over the events of my life, I take the most pride in our family – a wife who has hung in there, five great and gifted children, and five of the most brilliant and fantastic grandchildren there are!” It is without question that his sentiments above apply equally to the two additional grandchildren and three great-grandchildren who came after.
John will be buried in Texarkana, Arkansas with a graveside service.
