

Katherine Virginia Rayne, 89, a native of Baton Rouge, passed away peacefully on Tuesday January 12, 2016 at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital. Katherine was a true Woman of God and a compassionate soul. She was a beloved Aunt to many nieces and nephews who absolutely adored her. They are thankful to her for all of her heartfelt advice. She was the third child born to Selene Mahier Rayne and Stanford Rayne, Sr. on May 6, 1926 in Baton Rouge. After graduating from University High School in 1943, she attended LSU. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in 1947 and her Master's Degree in Social Work in May 1951, both from LSU. Her passion for helping people was reflected in her career in social work that spanned 35 years. Her career took her many places including Ft. Worth, Indianapolis, New Orleans, Midland, Beaumont then back to Baton Rouge in 1968 joining the LSU faculty as an assistant professor in the School of Social Welfare. In her tenure of 18 years at LSU she wrote articles and helped develop the 3-2 program for undergraduates. She also served as a School of Social Welfare representative in the LSU Faculty Senate for 3 years. In 1986 after retiring from LSU, she enjoyed spending her time with her many nieces and nephews, traveling, and participating in various clubs. Katherine was a long-time member of St. James Episcopal Church. She was also a member of Chapter A.C., P.E.O., Community Gardeners Garden Club, Delta Kappa Gamma Teachers Organization and Delta Delta Delta social sorority. Katherine is preceded in death by her parents and siblings Irma Rayne Tomberlin, Stanford Rayne, Jr., and John Robert Rayne, Sr. Grandparents were Henry T. Mahier and Maude Roberts Mahier and Silas E. Rayne, Sr. and Martha Ann Smith Rayne. She is survived by cousins, nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Friday, January 15, 2016 from 4 PM to 7 PM at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government Street. Church visitation will be at St. James Episcopal Church, Saturday, January 16, 2016 from 2PM until the funeral at 3PM. Burial to follow at Roselawn Memorial Park.
