
A retired family practitioner and a resident of Baton Rouge, he died Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2009, at. NHC Hillview of Columbia, Tenn. He was 98, born in New Orleans, the son of the late Albert Perez and Frances A. Wanner Perez. Following high school graduation in June 1927, he entered Loyola University and earned a degree from the School of Pharmacy in 1930 and was a member of Beta Phi Sigma Honor Fraternity. He worked for a period as a pharmacist/manager for Katz&Besthoff Drug Store in New Orleans and as a sales representative for Parke Davis&Co. from 1937 to 1943. In 1939, he became a charter member and served as secretary of the Baton Rouge Optimist Club until he entered military service. At the outset of World War II, he helped organize the USO in Baton Rouge and served as divisional co-captain for the fund drive. From 1944 to 1947, during and at the conclusion of World War II, he served in the medical services division of the U.S. Army stationed at U.S. Marine Hospital. During the Korean War, he served from 1954 to 1956 as assistant to the chief of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Brooke Army Medical Center and held the rank of major upon discharge. He was a member of the American Legion. Following military service, he entered medical school at LSU graduating with a doctor of medicine degree in April 1947. He entered private practice in Baton Rouge and served the community as a family practitioner until his retirement in 2000. During his more than 50 years of practice he served on the executive committee, and as chief of staff and medical director of the Department of Physical Medicine and Extended Care Unit of Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, and as a member of the Medical Staff and Advisory Board from 1960 to 1967. Additionally, he was a member of the medical staff of Baton Rouge General Hospital and Woman's Hospital where he remained an honorary member of both staffs until his death. During his years of private practice, he also served as physician and consultant for many industrial companies. Active in religious, civic and community affairs, he was a communicant of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church which he served as Eucharistic minister and Lector/Commentator for many years. He attained the 3rd degree in the Knights of Columbus and was a 4th degree Faithful Navigator and was honored as Knight of The Year at the first awards banquet of the Metropolitan Chapter. He was a charter member of the Baton Rogue Caravan 135 of Alhambra International and served as Grand Commander and Deputy Regional Director. Dr. Perez was honored with the Papal Honor, Knight Commander of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. He was a member of the Serra Club of Baton Rouge, Holy Name Society since 1921, served as co-captain of Manresa House of Retreats, was a charter member, treasurer, board and executive committee member of Guaranty Federal Savings&Loan Association, consultant for Atlanta National Life Insurance Co., past president of Catholic Physicians Guild and member of the Louisiana State Medical Society and American Occupational Medical Association. He was married Nov. 25, 1936, to the former Marie Sabathier. Their 54-year marriage ended with her death on June 9, 1991.·He is survived by a daughter, Clare Marie Perez (Price) Keller, of Columbia; grandchildren, Lori and husband Mark Orme, of Franklin, Tenn., Kenneth and wife Sandra Keller, of Los Angeles, Sharon and husband Rick Lyerly, of Birmingham, Ala., and Carl and wife Jeanne Keller, of Atlanta; great-grandchildren, Ashleigh and husband Hutch Garmany, Jason Orme, Danielle Keller, Eric Lyerly, Michael Orme, Christian Lyerly and Luke Keller; and great-great-grandsons, Hutchinson Garmany and Winters Garmany. Preceded in death by his brother, Albert W. Perez; and sister, Helen Perez Eastin. Visitation at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., on Monday, Aug. 24, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Visitation at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church on Tuesday, Aug. 25, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., with recitation of the rosary at 9:40 a.m., led by the Knights and Ladies of the Holy Sepulchre. Mass of Christian Burial at the church on Tuesday at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Miles Walsh, celebrant. Interment in Resthaven Gardens of Memory. Pallbearers will be Raymond Babin, John K. Cooper, Robert Germany, Christian Lyerly, Eric Lyerly, Andrew Perez, Louis Ruffino, Fulbert L. Sabathier and David Whatley. Honorary pallbearers are Sister Cynthia Sabathier, C.S.J., Jesse Hayes and Rita Hoffman. He was a member of the Our Lady of Mercy "Coffee Club."
