In the late 50's and early 60's I loved riding the train from Alexandria to Baton Rouge (alone) to spend time every summer with Aunt Marcella and Uncle Frank at their brand new home in Broadmoor. For at least a week every summer I would get to experience being an only child! I even had my best buddy, Phyllis Barnes, next door. There are so many things I learned to love because of them. My favorite memories involve getting dressed up and going to the Baton Rouge Little Theatre.  I learned to eat medium rare steaks at the Village (how fancy that was!) and enjoyed the seafood at Don's. But watching them make Pizza at Shakey's was always a highlight. At night we would play cards or dominos. During the day she even played jacks with me. One summer they took me and my brother with them to Destin. I think we must have been bad because that ended our travels together for the next 40 years! However, since 2004 we have had some good travels together! She was special and I loved her very much. I will surely miss her! 


I got acquainted with Marcella on a trip that we took with others from our church.  She was such a sweet lady, and I enjoyed getting to know her.  Later, I found out that she was from Colfax, which is close to where I grew up in Grant Parish.
My thoughts and prayers are with your family.  May God comfort you and give you peace. I am sure that you have many good memories.

Marcella was my first cousin. She was quite a few years older than me, but she was always so sweet to me. I rode the train with her parents, my aunt and uncle, from Alexandria to Baton Rouge to visit when I was 8 or 9. She gave me a lot of hair barrettes that she had saved for her students. Got to know her better after I became an adult and learned to love her even more.  She will be missed. 

Marcella was a dear friend of my mother, Ruth Phelps. When I visited Baton Rouge to be with mom, I always enjoyed visiting with Marcella and hearing tales of her world travels. But my favorite story was this one: My mother and Marcella decided they wanted to make some fig preserves, but could find no fresh figs in the stores. Mom found an ad in a local shopper that said "fresh figs for sale" and gave a phone number and address somewhere past Central. Mom called and a man gave her further directions. So, off they went with Marcella driving. They turned from the highway onto a dirt road. It was muddy and rutted. The trees closed in on either side. Eventually, Mom got out and directed Marcella where to steer so she could avoid getting the car stuck in the mud. (Remember, they were both in their late 80s or early 90s.) They reached a clearing with a dilapidated, wooden shack. Mom hollered a greeting but no one responded. It was a somber place, and they both were scared. Mom got in the car and they both hightailed it out of there! 
Marcella was always ready for an adventure. You are missed.

My mother Ruth Phelps who died September 2017 at age 102 was fortunate to have Marcella as a friend for many years.  They enjoyed going out together. In the photo Marcella and my mother are sitting next to each other outside  Drusilla Restaurant,  a few miles away from their homes.  They enjoyed conversations about Marcella's travels and the  books they read.  My mother took Marcella to doctor's appointments, and when my mother couldn't drive anymore, Marcella often took my mother to her appointments.  They enjoyed each other's company and  my mother cherished Marcella's friendship.
