
"Marion Lucille Crawford Spann, a lifelong resident of Baton Rouge, passed away at the age of 90 on Thursday, January 5th, 2017. She died peacefully with her husband and her son by her side at the Butterfly Wing of Hospice of Baton Rouge. She is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Delroy Ormer Spann of Baton Rouge, and her son Robert Baxter Spann and his wife Patricia Rock Spann of The Woodlands, Texas, and her two granddaughters, Whitney Elizabeth Spann of The Woodlands, and Kelsey Amelia Spann of Baton Rouge. She is also survived by two nephews, John Jay LaCour and his wife Lisa of Zachary, Louisiana, and their children, Victoria and Michael, and by Dr. James M. LaCour and his wife Hypatia of Slaughter, Louisiana. Marion is predeceased by her parents Robert Baxter Crawford and Lucille Dayries Crawford, and by her sister Helen "Cookie" LaCour. Marion was born on May 25, 1926. She started dance lessons at a young age and loved to perform in recitals and revues. She graduated from St. Joseph's Academy and went on to study at LSU, and was a lifelong Tiger fan. She graduated from LSU in 1948, earning a Science Degree from the College of Commerce. While at LSU, Marion was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority and Alpha Beta Chi. After graduation, Marion worked at Standard Oil in Baton Rouge in the Administration Department where she met her future husband Delroy. Marion and Delroy were married at St. Joseph's Cathedral in Baton Rouge on May 8, 1954. Their only child, a son, Robert Baxter was born two years later. She was a faithful member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic church, serving for a time on the Bereavement Committee. Marion treasured her volunteer work at the "Book Barn" "“ the Friends of the LSU Library group she was a part of for over twenty-five years, often serving as the Book Sale Chairman. Marion also had a passion for sewing, for herself, her home, and her family. She also loved gardening which led her to attend many garden tours with the Hilltop Arboretum. Her lifelong dream, a trip to England, came true in 1996. Most of all, Marion loved to gather with her family for a meal, a holiday, or some sightseeing. Her family loved to listen to her many lively stories of her youth in Baton Rouge, and of her family who came before. She was a loving wife, mother, aunt, mother-in-law, grandmother, and dear friend who will be greatly missed by all. Her family wishes to express their gratitude to the compassionate nurses and caregivers at the Hospice of Baton Rouge Butterfly Wing. Memorial donations may be made in her name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, or LSU Hilltop Arboretum. Family and friends are cordially invited to a visitation from 5:00pm to 8:00pm on Sunday, January 22nd at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St., Baton Rouge, LA. Visitation will resume on Monday, January 23rd at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, 445 Marquette Ave., Baton Rouge, from 9:30am until Mass at 10:30am, followed by graveside services at Roselawn Cemetery. A reception will follow at Rabenhorst Funeral Home on Government Street.
