On Wednesday, July 20, 2011, our Lord and Savior called home Martha Belle Davis Palmer. She died as she lived, at peace and loved by her family. She was the daughter of the late Orestes Angel Davis and Belle Florence Brown Davis, the widow of William McDavid Palmer and the mother of Pat Palmer Mitchell (Tom) and Angie Palmer Cummins (Hugh). She was the loving grandmother of Bronwyn and Daniel Mitchell and great-grandmother of Genevieve and Emily Mitchell. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews and other beloved family members as well as a host of friends. She was born Aug. 1, 1921, in Tanner Williams, Ala. Martha moved to New Orleans, where she graduated from the Mather School of Nursing at Southern Baptist Hospital. She married and moved to Baton Rouge, where she began her dedicated nursing career at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital. She later worked for the medical clinic of Dr. Sidney Mack, Dr. Milton Harris and Dr. Bibb Saye. She had never met a stranger. Martha spent time with her daughters and their friends as their Camp Fire Girls Leader for many years. She enjoyed camping in the mountains with her family and friends. Martha was an avid LSU Tiger fan, even attending LSU football games in her 80s. She enjoyed having her picture taken holding the bat that Warren Morris used to hit the game-winning home run in the 1996 College World Series. She was a devoted lover of animals. She loved and cared for many pets throughout her lifetime. The family wants to thank the staff and nurses at Heritage Manor Nursing Home for their loving care for the past four years and Life Source Hospice for the comfort and care given to her in her time of need. Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., on Friday, July 22, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The funeral service will be held at First New Testament Church, 3235 Aubin Lane, on Saturday, July 23, at 11 a.m. with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will follow after the service at Greenoaks Memorial Park at 2:30 p.m. Donations in her memory can be made to the charity of your choice or feel free to extend to others a random act of kindness.
