

Robert (Bob) Edwin Hanchey, a resident of Zachary and Tunica, LA, died on January 16, 2014 in a Lafayette hospital. He is survived by his wife, Dana Waguespack Hanchey; his children: Robert Taylor Hanchey and Ashton Myles Hanchey; his grandson, Conner Hayes Hanchey; and brothers James C. Hanchey of Lake Charles and Ben R. Hanchey of Monroe. His parents, Clint and Alice Pearl Hanchey, predeceased him. Bob was born January 4, 1943 in Lake Charles, LA, where his father was Assistant Superintendent of Calcasieu Parish Schools. He attended public schools in Calcasieu Parish and graduated from LaGrange High School. He was selected to the All State Basketball Team and received a scholarship to USL. He attended The University of Louisiana-Lafayette and McNeese State University where he received his BS. He was a member of Kappa Sigma social fraternity. He enrolled in Louisiana State University Medical School in New Orleans where he obtained his MD degree. After an internship and residency, Bob was certified to practice in the field of neurosurgery. He served 18 months in Vietnam receiving many commendations, including the Bronze Star. In the Vietnam War, Bob was assigned to a civilian hospital in Ban Me Thout to work as a surgeon. Many years later he returned to Vietnam and to his old hospital where he was re-united with several physicians and staff members with whom he worked years ago. Following his military service, Bob was a practicing neurosurgeon in Baton Rouge, and in Albany, Georgia. After a diagnosis of Grave's Disease, Bob retired from medical practice and devoted his spare time to hunting and fishing, activities he truly loved. Bob had an excellent duck hunt on the morning of his death. Visitation at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, Government St., Thursday, Jan.23, 2014, 12 noon until memorial services at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Services officiated by Father Roman Roldan and Deacon Suzie Johnston of Grace Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, LA Baptist Children's Home in Monroe, or charity of choice.
