
Richard Milburn Nunnally, 86, passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, September 1, 2015, joining his life love, Lucy, in heaven. He had just gotten off his tractor and was taking a rest. He was a man of many talents and craved learning. He read the following books cover to cover: the Bible, the dictionary, each of the Encyclopedias, and also knew every constellation. He was known by family and friends as "Papa" and was a great dancer. He was able to continue his passionate work of Pathology due to his devoted office manager and friend Florie Robertson. He was able to work his land on an ongoing basis with the support and friendship of his neighbor Jim Willis, who he appreciated very much. Dick was preceded in death by his bride, Lucy, of 48 years, his brother, Boyce "Boo" Nunnally and father Boyce "Bum" Nunnally, both of Gulfport, MS, and his mother, Minnie Milburn Nunnally of New Orleans, LA. He is survived by his son, James Nunnally and wife Dr. Donna Nunnally; three daughters, Dr. Susan McNamara and husband Price, Laura Saurage and husband Hank, and Sara Sylvest and husband Michael; and ten grandchildren, Elissa and Victoria Nunnally, Stephanie, Bennett and Christopher McNamara, Maddox and Hanson Saurage, and Lucy, Ella, and Molly Sylvest, all of Baton Rouge. He was quite accomplished as a physician. He began his education at Dufrocq Grammar school, Newman High School, Tulane University, Tulane Medical School, then completed internship and residency at Philadelphia General Hospital, Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Montgomery AFB Pathology Center in Montgomery, AL, then Tulane and Charity Hospital Departments of Pathology in New Orleans, LA. He then had additional training in Medical Radioisotopes at Hunter Memorial Laboratory in Washington, DC, UCLA Nuclear Medicine at University of Chicago, then later he received his Dermatopathology degree from the University of California at Irvine. He was Board Certified in Pathology, Nuclear Medicine and Dermatopathology. He served in the Air Force 1957-1959. He taught at many universities. He served on the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners from 1975-2000, serving as President from 1985-1988. He was on the Board of Directors of the College of American Pathologists from 1962-1999, serving multiple positions. He was also on the Board of Directors of the College of American Pathologists Foundation. He was President of the East Baton Rouge Parish Medical Society in 1972, and held multiple other positions in this society. He was the President of the Louisiana Pathology Society 1968-1970. He was active in the City Club of Baton Rouge, Baton Rouge Country Club, Krewe of Achilles, Bal de Noel, and the Baton Rouge Assembly. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral services at First Presbyterian Church, 763 North Blvd., Baton Rouge, LA on Friday, September 4, 2015 at 11:00 am by Garrit Dawson with visitation Thursday, September 3, 2015 from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm at Rabenhorst Funeral Home on Government Street and continuing from 9:00 am - 11:00 am at First Presbyterian Church before the service on Friday. Interment will follow the service at Resthaven Gardens of Memory. Pallbearers are James Nunnally, Price McNamara, Hank Saurage, Michael Sylvest, Bennett McNamara and Chris McNamara. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in memory of Dr. Nunnally be made to First Presbyterian Church of Baton Rouge or a charity of your choice .
