
On Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, Michael "Mike" Phillips passed away peacefully following a brief illness with cancer. He was born Feb. 9, 1944, son of William and Vera Phillips. He was raised in Mineola, Texas, where sports, especially football, became an important part of Mike's life. This led him to Texas A&M and McNeese State, where he enjoyed a fine football career. Mike always said playing ball was one of the most positive influences on his life. His competitive spirit led him to the love of all sports which he enjoyed and passed down to his children and grandchildren. Mike was a dedicated Ecolab employee for 28 years. He and his family moved to several cities and states, making lifelong friends along the way. Mike never met a stranger and was always eager to help others. He moved to Baton Rouge many years ago and it became home. Mike loved the Tigers. Mike's love surrounded his family, especially his grandchildren. "Grandpa" was the best and could make an awesome pot of gumbo! He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 45 years, Cheryl; his daughter Molly, son-in-law, Manfred Sternberg, and grandchildren, Max and Maggie; daughter, Melissa, son-in-law, Marc Warner, and grandson, Holt; daughter, Meredith, son-in-law, Darryl Nowotny, and granddaughter, Emma Grace; daughter, Mandi; and son, Michael. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Margaret Denton; brothers, Keith, Harold, Donald and Jerry; sisters, Jo, Ann and Beth; brother-in-law, Bob Denton; sister-in-law, Robyn Denton; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St. Visitation begins at noon prior to service. All guests and friends are invited to join the family at a reception following the service at the Heatherstone Club House, 5216 Heatherstone Drive.
