
Michael "Mike" V. Chambers Jr. died peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008. He was 81, a resident of Baton Rouge and native of Mississippi. He was a chemistry teacher and assistant principal at Istrouma High School. He later retired as science supervisor for the East Baton Rouge Parish school system. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy in which he served as a medic. Visiting at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., on Tuesday, Sept. 30, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visiting at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until religious service at 10:30 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Miles Walsh. Interment in Greenoaks Memorial Park. Survived by his wife of 54 years, Helen Meyerer Chambers; three daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy and Randy Efferson, of Baton Rouge, Kristen and Jack Faller, of Denham Springs, and Karen and Larry Ruth, of Baton Rouge; and son, Mark Lance Chambers, Baton Rouge. He was a devoted "Gramps" to nine grandchildren, Scott and Brian Efferson, Mallory and Mason Chambers, Brittany and Lauren Faller and Christopher, Brandon and Caroline Ruth. Also survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Billy and Lorraine Chambers; sister and brother-in-law, Beth and James Yount; and several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents, Michael and Ione Chambers; brother, Johnny Chambers; sister, Norma Dayne Madison; and nephew, Larry Chambers. Pallbearers will be Scott Efferson, Brian Efferson, Randy Efferson, Jack Faller, Larry Ruth and Clay Perkins. Honorary pallbearers are Mason Chambers, Christopher Ruth and Brandon Ruth. Mr. Chambers was a graduate of Istrouma High School and earned two master's degrees from LSU. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, reading and nurturing his many plants. While at Istrouma, he touched many students' lives and the family has been blessed to have had so many visit and share their stories about Mr. Chambers. Several students became lifelong friends of his and he valued their friendships. During his professional career, he received numerous education awards and achievements. We wish to thank Hospice of Baton Rouge and all their caring staff, especially Cindy and Vicki, and Dr. Chris McCanless and staff.
