Peggy was a loving mother to her surviving children, Kathy Fleniken Estes (Cliff), Connie Fleniken Sedlock, and Mel Fleniken (Fran). Peggy was known as “Granny” and cherished by her grandchildren: Beth Estes Bourgeois (Micah), Katie Estes Guy, Vickie Estes Andrews (Kyle), Ryan McCullough, Peggy Sedlock, Trey Sedlock (Kristin), Kade Fleniken, and Alexa Fleniken Butcher (Daniel). Affectionately known as “GG,” by her great-grandchildren who made her laugh often: Jayden, Julien, Brooks, and Cameron Bourgeois; Morgan and Juliana Guy; Lucas and Kobe Andrews; Summer McCullough; Parker and Lanie Sedlock; and Luke and Joseph Butcher.
She is also survived by her sister, Elizabeth Reed Andre; her sister-in-law Linda St. Romain Reed; and her faithful companion of 12 years, her dog, Penny.
In 1956, Peggy married Melvin Raymond “Ray” Fleniken. They shared 47 devoted years of marriage and were rarely seen apart. Together, they were avid walkers. They loved traveling around the country in their travel trailer to participate in race walks. In the years following Ray’s death in 2003, Peggy often reminisced about those times, fondly sharing stories of the friendships they formed and places they visited.
In later years, she spent her time quietly with her children and their families. A passionate genealogist, Peggy spent countless hours researching and documenting family history. She also loved gardening, both indoors and out. A patch of earth was a blank canvas for Peggy; the resulting garden a work of art, beautiful and joy-giving. Although she didn’t realize it, her gardens were a reflection of herself.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Raymond “Ray” Fleniken; parents Dewey Harold Reed and Lillie Olivia Ellzey Reed; siblings Emilie Faye Reed Miller and husband Robert Richard Miller, Dewey Harold Reed, Jr., William “Bill” Reed and wife Sherryl Ann Richardson Reed; son-in-law Clement “Clem” Henry Sedlock, Jr.; brothers-in-law Ivan Hugh Fleniken, Jr. and wife Jean Raines Fleniken, Daly Eugene Fleniken and wife Sally Ann Senn Fleniken, Noah Joseph Andre, Joseph Fleniken; Peggy Katherine Fleniken.
A visitation will be held at Rabenhorst Funeral Home on Government Street on Monday, April 6, 2026 from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Burial to follow at Roselawn Memorial Park on North Street. Peggy wanted her pallbearers to be her 8 grandchildren; Beth, Katie, Vickie, Ryan, Peggy, Trey, Kade and Alexa, and for her sister, Elizabeth, to be an honorary pallbearer. She also wanted to thank Jackie Adams from Ochsner for her kindness and friendship and everyone at St. Joseph’s Hospice for their care and concern.
As her time grew shorter, Peggy expressed the wish to not burden her children and hoped that her final day would fall on an even number. Her wishes were granted.
