Richard Foster Murphy, a lifelong resident of Baton Rouge, passed away unexpectedly on November 19, 2025, at the age of 71. Richard was an avid golfer and a devoted LSU sports fan who never missed a game. He also loved to cook, and nothing made him happier than gathering everyone together over a good meal—especially when he was making his famous chicken wings that became a beloved family staple. His love of golf took him across the world, including two unforgettable trips to Scotland to play the courses he’d always dreamed of. Richard attended St. Paul’s School in Covington before later graduating from Lee High School in Baton Rouge. He went on to serve the State of Louisiana with pride, including his time as Director of the Louisiana State Tax Commission, a role he held with dedication and integrity. Above all, Richard cherished time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren, who were the joy of his life. He is survived by his daughter, Katelyn Murphy Hodges (Scott); his son, William Foster Murphy (Meagan); and his beloved grandchildren: Jackson, Mia, Hudson, and Brooks Hodges, and Logan Elizabeth Murphy. He is also survived by his brother, Benjamin R. Franklin (Allen); sister-in-law, Harriet Murphy; and nephews Eric, Christopher, and Patrick Murphy, and Rogers Franklin. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis Prescott Murphy and Mae Adele Gleason Murphy; his brothers, Joseph Prescott Murphy and Michael G. Murphy; and his nephew, Hansen Franklin. A memorial visitation will take place on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church beginning at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to the Our Lady of the Lake Emergency Room physicians and staff for the care and compassion they provided. Honorary Pallbearers will be Butch Knight, Steve Daniel, Ronnie Onofry, Roger Bajon, David Galasso, Rick Dendy, Jonny Parker, Ben Franklin, Rogers Franklin, Tim Morrison, Toby Reese, Garrett Lacour and his golfing buddies.
