

Capt. Robert W. Spencer, USN (Ret.) "Sonny" passed away on December 31, 2025, at the age of 96. He died peacefully at his home in Geismar, Louisiana (his residence since 2016) surrounded by his entire family and friends whether in mind, body, or spirit. He was born October 28, 1929, in Columbus, Georgia to Milton and Sadie (Webb) Spencer.
At age 18 Robert Webb Spencer joined the Naval Reserves. Flying was always his passion, and he received his wings at age 21. During his 31 years in the Navy, he was a flight instructor for both fixed wing and helicopters, flew off of 7 different aircraft carriers, was designated as the first Commanding Officer of Navy Light Helicopter Attack Squadron HA(L)3 "Seawolves" in Vietnam, and is a veteran of the Korean War and Vietnam War serving two tours with each. He was most proud of his Seawolves. Awards and commendations include the Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, 10 Air Medals, Ground Combat Award (rare for a pilot), listed in Who's Who for Naval Aviation, and was inducted into the Baton Rouge High School Hall of Fame as the most decorated military personnel to have graduated from there.
Family life was most important to him. He was married to Patricia Ledet Spencer (deceased) for 27 years and together they raised five beautiful children: Robert Webb Spencer, Jr, deceased (Sandra), Stacy Spencer Rowbal (Bob), Steven Ledet Spencer (Renae), Kathy Lynne Spencer and Karen Spencer Osborne who were his entire heart.
In the next chapter of his life, he married Patti Meehl Spencer (deceased) with whom he traveled, explored, and loved for over 30 years. Patti went into their marriage with four children: Kim Avery Henderson (Donald Ray), G. Aybyn Avery, Jr (Kim), Donna Avery Flynn (Stephen), and Angela Avery Robinson (Wyatt) who he helped nurture, advise, guide, and loved unconditionally. He brought together 9 young adults and made an incredibly beautiful family. He was blessed with 15 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
Capt. Robert W. Spencer was a patriot who left his undeniable impact on all who were fortunate enough to know him, work with him, learn from him, appreciate and love him. He truly made his mark on the world and will be incredibly missed.
A visitation will be held at Rabenhorst Funeral Home & Crematory, located at 825 Government Street, Baton Rouge, LA 70802, on January 10, 2026, beginning at 10:00AM until the service beginning at 11:30AM with a Graveside with Military Honors at Roselawn Cemetery immediately following.
Pallbearers will be: Steven Ledet Spencer, Donald Ray Henderson, Wyatt Samuel Robinson, Robert Roy Rowbal, Russell R. Robinson and Horace Aubrey Lofton III.
In lieu of flowers please send memorials to the organization Capt. Spencer supported most passionately for decades: St. Jude Children's Hospital. One of his great grandchildren is a childhood cancer survivor.
