

Sam Calandro, born January 23, 1919 in Tickfaw, LA and a resident of Baton Rouge, passed away Saturday, November 23, 2013 at the age of 94. Sam graduated from Independence High School and attended Southeastern LA University. He was a WWII Veteran of the US Army, member of 712th Tank Battalion, the American Italian Association of Baton Rouge, and the American Legion. Sam, an accountant, retired from the La Dept of Employment Security and continued to work at Calandro’s Supermarket where he worked and visited daily until the age of 92. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be missed dearly by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Sam is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Sylvia Fontenot Calandro; daughter, Donna Calandro Toadvin of Baton Rouge; son, Samuel Keith Calandro and his domestic partner Rob Cameron of Los Angeles, CA; granddaughter, Julia Toadvin; and two sisters, Rosalie Crawford and Catherine Hoffman. He is preceded in death by his parents, Santo and Caterina Calandro; daughter, Janet Guillory; brothers, Brazil, Vic, Frank, Tony, and Joe Calandro; and two sisters, Mary Inzenga and Camille Spitale. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 27, 2013 at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church from 9am until Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30am. Interment will follow in Greenoaks Memorial Park, followed by a gathering for family and friends at Greenoaks Life Celebration Center. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Amber Terrace Assisted Living Community, Clarity Hospice and caregivers Kiplyn Brown, Tina Parms, and Linda Brown for their generous care, love and support.
