Shirley Bennett Hicks, a resident of Baton Rouge and native of St Francisville, LA, passed away peacefully at home on August 20, 2024. She was 88 years old, born on April 16, 1936. She was the 6th child of 9 Children. Shirley graduated from St Francisville High School in 1954. She married the love of her life Charles Radford Hicks, Sr. She worked at Louisiana National Bank for 20 years, retired as a 23-year bus driver with East Baton Rouge Parish and semi-retired until the age of 79. Shirley was a devout catholic who served as a Eucharist Minister and a Catholic Daughter at St. Jean Vianney Church. She served meals at St. Vincent de Paul as well as delivered meals for Meals on Wheels. She was an avid lover of all sports, especially LSU Baseball and Football. After retirement, she enjoyed volunteering as an officiant with LSU Track and Field for over 20 years.
Shirley is survived by her children; son, Charles Radford “Rad” Hicks, Jr., daughter, Melissa Hicks Jenkins (Ron) and son, Philip Matthew Hicks; siblings Charles R. "Choo Choo" Bennett, Dodie B. Charlet, and Helen "Ruthie" Davis (Randy), Grandchildren Leanna Hicks Carey (Patrick), Sarah Hicks Briggs (Dustin), Katie Grace Hicks, Katelyn Joy Jenkins and Savannah Elizabeth Hicks and one great grandchild, Opal June Carey.
She was preceded in death by her husband Charles Radford Hicks, Sr., parents Captain Philip Morris Bennett and Helen Valin Bennett, brothers Philip Morris Bennett, Jr. and James W Bennett; her sisters Martha B Senter, Irma B Bryant and Betty Ruth Rinaudo and daughter-in-law Laura Wenker Hicks.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, at St. Jean Vianney Catholic Church in Baton Rouge, from 10:00 am until a memorial service begins at 11:30 am. Burial will follow at St George Catholic Church in Baton Rouge.
