"A true friend, Thomas Pyburn, the son of the late Velda Raley Pyburn and William Jackson Pyburn, was born October 19, 1925, and passed away in Arlington, Virginia on May 25, 2017. He considered Baton Rouge his hometown as he graduated from Baton Rouge High School and received a Bachelor's Degree in Petroleum Engineering from LSU. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, flying many missions over Germany as the tail gunner on a B-17 bomber. Following active duty service, he remained in the Air Force Reserve and retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel (Reserve). Tom received a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Columbia University, and experienced an extended and successful career in the oil and gas and banking businesses. His travels for business and pleasure took him to many parts of the world to include Mexico, Alaska, Canada, England, Africa, European Continent, and Singapore. Before moving to Arlington, Virginia in 2016, he resided for many years in Los Angeles, where he was a devoted member of St. James Episcopal Church. His memberships also included the LSU and Sigma Chi Alumni groups, Sons of American Revolution and The Shriners. A brief article cannot fully describe his zest for life, as he was most appreciative of people, nature (wildlife in particular), photography, art, books and classical music. He was an avid outdoorsman and LSU football fan, and leaves behind many lifelong true friends. Also, surviving him are his sister Jane Singletary of Arlington, Virginia, his nieces, Nancy Singletary and Joanne Mann, and nephew Andrew Singletary. Visitation will be on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at Rabenhorst Funeral Home (825 Government Street, Baton Rouge, LA 70802) from 9:30 am until the Memorial Service at 10:30 officiated by Rev. Pattye Hewitt. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park.
