
William I. McGarr, known as Bill or Bub, died at 11:30 a.m. Friday, March 21, 2008, at Oschner Medical Center-Baton Rouge. He was a resident of Baton Rouge since 1962. Bub was born on June 6, 1931, in Belzonia, Miss., to Willie B. and Nina Rowland McGarr. He was a graduate of Eupora High School in Eupora, Miss., attended Mississippi State University and graduated from Delta State University with a bachelor's degree in business administration. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend, with strength of character admired and respected by all who knew him. He lived a life of service to his family, church, community, country, and Masonic Lodges. He was a 52-year member of Eupora Masonic Lodge 423; a 32nd degree KGCH Scottish Rite Mason, New Orleans, and served on the Divan of Acacia Shriners of Baton Rouge. He was a 38"°-year General Motors retiree. His second career was in real estate, associated with Reynolds, Sumrall&Scruggs of Baton Rouge. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, golfing, gardening and garage sales. He was a frequent visitor to his Eupora camp in Mississippi. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Taylor McGarr, and daughter, Charlotte Ann McGarr, both of Baton Rouge. His son, Charles Taylor McGarr, preceded him in death. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Charles Taylor McGarr II and Annie Flynn McGarr, and their mother, Kitty Reed McGarr, all of Baton Rouge. Preceded in death by a brother, Paul Rowland McGarr, and survived by a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Smith McGarr, of Greensboro, N.C. Preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Buddy Taylor, and survived by a sister-in-law, Judy Taylor, of Eupora. Survived by sisters-in-law Dr. Kathleen Taylor Foster, of Corunna, Mich., and Patty Taylor Peeler, of Tucson, Ariz; and nieces and nephews. Mr. McGarr was a member of Broadmoor Baptist Church for more than 30 years. He was a Korean War veteran, having served in Italy, Austria and Germany with the 516th Signal Corp and Communications Centers of the U.S. Army with an honorable discharge at Fort Benning, Ga., where he helped set up the Replacement Depot in 1956. He was a member of Baton Rouge American Legion Post 38. Visitation at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., on Tuesday, March 25, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., with a Masonic service at 7 p.m. hosted by Frank Dedman, Bill Mollere and Gerard Ruth. Visitation continues on Wednesday from 8 a.m. until funeral service at 9 a.m., with Dr. John Goodwin officiating. Pallbearers will be Taylor McGarr, Phillip McDonner, Jim Mitchell, Allen Dearmond, Gerard Ruth and Jeff Williams. Graveside service at Eupora Cemetery, Eupora, at 3 p.m. Wednesday, with Brother Willie Weddle officiating. Pallbearers for the graveside service will be Taylor McGarr, Allen Dearmond, Jimmy McCain, Dean Hall, Charlie Ward and Pete Fortner. Honorary pallbearer is Dal Hansen. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made through the Acacia Shrine Temple AAONMS, 7991 S. Commerce Ave., Baton Rouge, LA 70815, for the Crippled Children's Hospital of Shreveport.
