Alice Charlene Hooper, 82, of Hankamer, Texas, went to be with the Lord on May 17, 2026. She passed peacefully, in her home surrounded by family and friends. She was born in Goose Creek, Texas, on February 16, 1944, to Weldon and Ollie Chandler. She was married to her loving husband, Vann, for 59 years until his death in 2023. Charlene lived most of her life in Highlands, Texas, until her son moved her near his home in Hankamer so that he could care for her, and she could still maintain her independence.
She was a long-time member of First Baptist Highlands where she was a very active member. She taught 2nd grade Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for many years. She was also the Funeral Meals Coordinator for several years as well. She would order main dishes and call other church members to provide side dishes and organize volunteers to serve. She would be there to help set up, serve family members who lost loved ones, and stay until clean-up was completed. She believed strongly in service to the Lord.
Her hobbies included sewing and art. She was an avid painter who shared many of her works of art with family and friends over the years. Most of all, she loved spending time with her granddaughters whom she loved dearly.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Weldon and Ollie Chandler; her husband, Vann Hooper; her son, Vincent Hooper; her sister Barbara Talley; and her brother, Tommy Chandler. She is survived by her son and his wife, Carter and Karen Hooper; her granddaughter and her husband, Kaitlin and Logan Rhame; her granddaughter and her husband, Cara and Eric Monteau; her great grandchildren, Aria Rhame, Weldon Rhame, Waylon Rhame, and Carter Beth Monteau; her sister, Elaine Humphreys; her sister-in-law, Emily Chandler; and many nieces and nephews.
No public funeral service will be held. The family will hold a private celebration of her life at a later date. If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to First Baptist Highlands at 210 North Magnolia, Highlands, TX 77562.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude for the wonderful care given to Charlene by her in-home caregivers Debbie Matocha (deceased), Tera Walker, Tina Moffett, Reese Sidney, Janice Cooper, and Teri Blackburn. Their kindness and love will never be forgotten. They would also like to thank the wonderful staff of Ascend Hospice for not only their care and support over the last few years but also the guidance given in Charlene’s last few days.
