Emmett Miller Bingham passed to his Heavenly Home on August 12, 2021 at the age of 81 after fighting a courageous battle with cancer. Emmett was born on July 22, 1940 in Houston, Texas and was raised by his parents Bill and Bernice Pearce in Galena Park, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Raymond Bingham; in-laws, Wayne and Dorothy Allison; and brother-in-law, Johnnie Allison. Emmett is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Hedy Bingham; sons, Kirk Bingham and Steven Bingham; daughter and son-in-law, Eadie and James Skelton; and grandchildren, Michelle, Andie and Ben.
Emmett was a proud member of the Galena Park High School Class of 1958. He maintained lifelong friendships with his classmates through numerous reunions and weekly breakfast meetings. He cherished the bonds they had together and took great joy any time they got together.
Emmett had a distinguished 40 year career with Brown & Root / KBR as a dedicated employee advancing through many positions, ultimately retiring in 2011. It was at work where he met his future wife Hedy.
Emmett was known to all for his positive outlook and uplifting attitude on life as reflected by his first love of God above all else. This was clearly evidenced by his role as leader and mentor at Baytown’s First Baptist Church where he faithfully served The Lord for over 30 years teaching Bible Study and Sunday School across the full spectrum of classes; Men’s, Jr. High, Young Adult Co-Ed students and any class in need of a substitute teacher. He was a fixture on many Church Committees and Staff Liaison. He touched and blessed countless lives through his dedication to studying and teaching God’s Word.
Emmett was equally as passionate about his love of sports; both as a fan cheering for his favorite teams and as a coach encouraging youth to participate and grow as individuals in a team environment.
The Astros were Emmett’s primary professional team to root for as he organized a group of season ticket holders for 18 years spanning play from the Astrodome to Minute Maid Park. However, his favorite rooting interest was when his children were playing ball, and most recently as Steven progressed through coaching within Goose Creek Independent School District.
Emmett’s own career in coaching spanned many sports and began with Little League baseball in the 1960’s. His interests expanded to soccer and basketball, first at the Baytown YMCA where he served on the Board of Directors, and then to a youth basketball skills program “Players in Progress” which allowed participants to build their confidence while showcasing their skills to audiences in professional, college and high school arenas. Emmett “hit his stride” with coaching when he got involved with the Upward Programs which combined developing athletic skills with Christian values. He started with Upward Basketball sponsored through Baytown’s Memorial Baptist and Second Baptist churches for more than 20 years. He also helped lead the Upward Soccer and Upward Football programs at Baytown’s First Baptist Church for many years. Everyone always knew Emmett was the first one on the field or on the court to be sure the day was organized, and the last to leave. He was dedicated to guiding youth in the right direction and did so with his words and actions.
Emmett and Hedy lived a life filled with love, laughter and happiness.
