Born in Cushing, Texas to parents Cecil and Lela Belle (Wade) Rawlinson, he moved to Baytown, Texas at age six when his Father became employed by Humble Oil Refinery. Dean’s first job began shortly thereafter, when an older cousin asked him to help out with his newspaper route. He quickly realized there was money to be made, so he got his own stack of newspapers and would sell them to employees leaving the main entrance of Humble Oil. The men, would stop, pat him on the head, buy a paper and call him by his nickname, “Cotton Top”, due to his blonde nearly white hair. By the age of fifteen, Dean had saved enough money to purchase a brand new car leading his Father to comment that “his son had more money in savings than he did!”
Dean continued his strong work ethic throughout his life. First serving his County as a Platoon Sergeant and range instructor in the National Guard and then as a Project Engineer for the Texas Department of Transportation. Upon his retirement, he moved to Highlands, Texas where he enjoyed a well-deserved rest in retirement.
His love for the outdoors was expressed throughout his life as he enjoyed many happy years owning and maintaining a second home for his family north of Lake Livingston, in Carlisle, TX. He was an avid bass fisherman and once belonged to Lure Master Bass Club of America. He, along with his fishing partner, Donell Marshall, won many tournaments together over the years. Many happy hours were spent each fall, as he, his Father and Grandsons hunted in the woods of East Texas and on various big game hunts.
First and foremost in his life was the love he had for his family and his Christian faith. He attended Faith Temple Church where he served many years as the church treasurer and board member. When the church relocated to the present day Harvest Temple on Rollingbrook Drive, he worked daily as part of the construction crew. Upon moving to Highlands, he became a faithful member of First Apostolic Church where he loved the membership as family.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 61 years, Jaunice (Willis) Rawlinson; his only child Dr. Kimberly Rawlinson and two grandsons, of which he was most proud, Dex and Drew Greer, and many close family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents; Cecil & Lela Belle and his beloved Step-Mother, Ozie Rawlinson.
A generous man, and friend to all, Dean was quick to lend a helping hand, donate to a worthy cause, help the needy and unfortunate and offer encouragement to all. His was a life well lived and He will be greatly missed.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, February 1, 2018 from 5:00 to 8:00pm at First Apostolic Church, 1211 S Main St, Highlands, TX 77562.
