
Gerald D. Smith passed away on June 6, 2017. He was born in Vermont, Illinois on August 27, 1941. Gerald attended school in Ottawa, Illinois and joined the Marine Corps at the age of seventeen. Upon discharge he moved to Texas and obtained his BA degree in Accounting from Texas Tech University and later, his Masters of Education from the University of Houston at Clear Lake.
Gerald worked for Tenneco in the Accounting Department and taught high school government and economics, along with coaching varsity baseball, at Jeff Davis High School in Houston.
Gerald, or ""Jay"" as he was known, also spent years coaching Pony League Baseball. He loved the outdoors, hiking in the mountains of the Western U.S. and Canada and was a generous father and grandfather to his son and grandsons. He will be forever missed by those who loved him.
Preceding him in death were his in-laws, Fred and Beth Geyer and a niece, Erin Herrington.
Survivors include his son, Kelly Smith; grandsons, Jacob and Joshua Smith; wife, Carolyn Smith; brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Jeanie Herrington; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Watson; nephews, Cody Herrington and Rusty Wallace and a niece, Debbie Zornes.
There will be a private family memorial service at a later date.
