Hazel Johnson Downs

Hazel Johnson Downs, 76, died peacefully at home on May 24, 2015 after a brief battle with cancer. She was born at her family home in Carthage, Texas on August 9, 1938 to Nathaniel and Mary Lee Johnson.

Hazel was a graduate of Robert E. Lee High School in Baytown as well as Lee College where she graduated as a Licensed Vocational Nurse. Hazel worked her entire life in the Baytown area as a nurse. She began her nursing career at Gulf Coast Hospital and later owned and operated both Downs Nursing Service and Parkland EduCare Center.

Hazel is preceded in death by her parents and her brother Joe Johnson. She is also survived by her brother Dr. James Johnson and his wife Linda; her children, Debbie Thain and her husband Buster, John Downs Jr. and his wife Angela, Brenda Beauchamp and her husband Ken, and Mike Downs and his wife Abby. She was the proud grandmother to Jared Munson, Ashley Munson, Courtney Roberts and her husband Russel, Halea Downs, Amanda Wurzbach and her husband Christopher, Brianna Watson, Madeline Downs, Bethany Downs, Ryan Downs, Hannah Downs and Hunter Downs and her great-grand children Jayse Munson, Kaydence Talbott, and Easton Bayless.

The family will welcome visitors Thursday, May 28, 2015 from 6-8PM at Navarre Funeral Home. A family graveside service will take place at 11AM on May 29, 2015 at Old Center Cemetery in Tenaha, Texas with her brother Dr. James Johnson officiating.
