
Henry Nelson Armstrong of Baytown, TX, died Wednesday, June 8, 2005. He was born July 24, 1923 in Graham, TX, the son of George and Nell Steel Armstrong. He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, George Steel Armstrong.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Margaret Wilson Armstrong, a son, H. Scott Armstrong and wife Laura of Spanish Fort, Alabama, and a son, Lee N. Armstrong, of Baytown. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Travis Scott Armstrong and Laurie Katherine Armstrong, both of Nashville, TN. He is survived by a niece, Kay Armstrong Cox and a nephew, George Steel Armstrong and their families.
He graduated from Wichita Falls High School and entered Rice University in 1941. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps, which included a year in training at SLI in Lafayette, LA and service in the Pacific theater from 1944 until he returned to Rice in 1946, where he was a member of the Rice Owls football team that won the Orange Bowl in 1947.
He graduated from Rice in 1948 and was married to Mary Margaret Wilson. He was recalled to the Marines during the Korean War, in which he served as a Captain and received the Bronze Star with a combat “V”. He held coaching assignments in Alice, TX, San Angelo, TX, and Corpus Christi, TX before coming to Robert E. Lee High School in Baytown in 1956, where he was an assistant coach, assistant principal, and then principal for twenty-five years. He earned a M.Ed from the University of Houston.
He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church where he was a member of the Vestry. He was a long-time member of the Baytown Noon Lions Club, in which he served as President, 1992-1993, and was named a Melvin Jones Fellow of Lions International. He served on the Baytown Parks and Recreation Board, Chamber of Commerce Board, Baytown United Way Board, and Baytown Retired Teachers.
Visitation with the family will be held at Navarre Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 10. A memorial service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, 2701 West Main St. at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 11. The Rev. Joseph Spitler will officiate. If desired, remembrances may be made to the Trinity Episcopal Church Building Fund, Sterling Municipal Library, or a charity of your choice.
