

Herbert V. Herbert was born in Houston August 21, 1918. He lived in Goose Creek Oil Field in late 1918 and early 1919, grew up in Lufkin, and moved to Baytown in 1937, where he eventually met Virginia Lee Bolieu. They were married in 1942.
He served in the U.S. Air Force for 4 years during World War II. After the war he returned to Baytown and worked for Humble Oil and Refining Co. for 5 years. In 1950, he became a district sales manager for Kemper-Thomas Advertising Co., working for Kemper-Thomas until 1954, at which time he became a partner in Arnett, McDonald, and Herbert Insurance Agency. He remained in the insurance business for the next 40 years.
For over 40 years he served the Boy Scouts of America as both a Scout Master and merit badge counselor.
He was a charter member of the Baytown YMCA and served on the board of the ""Y"" and as vice president.
As a member of the Goose Creek Chamber of Commerce, he served on the committee responsible for getting the first probation officer assigned to Baytown. He volunteered as a case worker for the Harris County Probation Department in 1939-40.
He was a member of the Commodore Club of Baytown Chamber of Commerce, was a two-year president of Baytown East Little League, and was a member of the Baytown Community Chest. He also served 4 years as a board member of Baytown Medical Center and served one year as president. He volunteered for the Road to Recovery program and tutored in the Sterling Library's Literacy Volunteer Program.
A Kiwanian since 1951, he served in every office except treasurer, also serving as Secretary of the Texas-Oklahoma District. He received a lifetime service award from Kiwanis International.
He became a volunteer for Hospice in 1992. Subsequently, he was named Volunteer Coordinator. He also counseled youths who were assigned to Hospice for community service by Judge Tony Polumbo.
He was a 58-year member of First Presbyterian Church, now Faith Presbyterian Church, where he was an Elder and a Stephen Minister. For more than ten years he worked as an insurance counselor at the Baytown Senior Center assisting with claims problems and cost reviews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Virginia Bolieu Herbert; parents, John and Amelia Herbert; brothers, R. L. Herbert and Hampton Herbert; and sisters, Jane Davis and Dorothy Wilder. He is survived by sons, George Nelson Herbert and wife Sherry of Beaumont and Philip Stiles Herbert and wife Mary Frances of De Soto, IA; daughters, Ann Herbert Weiner and husband Morris of Houston and Mary Herbert Rohrbacher and husband George Grimes of Kemah; and grandchildren, Lauren Davis and husband Kerry of Lewisville and Avery Herbert of De Soto, IA.
His family will receive friends at Navarre Funeral Home Thursday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. A graveside service will be held Friday, February 6, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Cedarcrest Cemetery and a memorial service will follow at 12 noon at Faith Presbyterian Church, 1715 Market St., Baytown, TX 77520 with Dr. Richard Kleiman officiating.
Serving as pallbearers will be his nephews, Robert Herbert, Steven Herbert, David Herbert, John Herbert and John Wilder and dear friends, Bill Lucas.
